Spiritual Hygiene Grounding in Nature

Keep it Clean! 7 Tools for Spiritual Hygiene

Spiritual hygiene practices are like anchors that return you to your baseline energy. Each day, we immerse ourselves in a sea of vacillating vibrations. Some are uplifting, others are neutral, and many are outright toxic! We maintain our energetic integrity best when we practice clearing our energy daily. These tools promote a more conscious way of interacting with the world. With practice and consistency, spiritual hygiene helps us better honor ourselves. Spring, the season of new beginnings, is the perfect time to offer these essential reminders. Make them part of your daily habits, like brushing your teeth, and they will enhance the overall quality of your being-ness.

Outside in, Inside Out

Any act of cleaning or purging, especially when completed with mindful intention, will serve as an energetic clearing task. Today’s temperatures are above average, so the opportunity to clean my car is within sight. Refreshing the spaces closest to me offers an immediate upgrade to my energy. It was a long winter, and my car smelled like wet sneakers. Bits of straw entangled with the sports equipment that live in my RAV and the wrappers in the side door compartment remind me of my snacking habits. My car now reflects the energy of self-care and loving acknowledgment of deserving spaces that uplift and bless me.

I acknowledge how present I am with this task and give thanks for my ability to stay embodied. It wasn’t always this way. If you feel trapped in cyclic thinking and want tips for escaping unhealthy thought patterns, read Spring Clean a Path to Freedom. Cleaning the outside is a solid, easy way to move your energy. To care for your sacred self, adopt and implement daily practices for spiritual hygiene. Simple, practical additions to your routine have the potential to keep your vibe high and interactions with the world ‘clean’ without unnecessary complications.

Care for Your Physical Vessel

Treat your body well by loving what it does for you. Feed, move, and rest your body to honor its sacred purpose of carrying you around. Often, outside expectations of how our bodies should look negatively affect our relationship with them. Harm to our vessels makes some feel broken or that their bodies are not a safe place to reside. Regular spiritual hygiene practices help improve this dynamic, shifting our connection to our physical form in healthier ways.

Improving this relationship sets the framework for fine-tuning your inner compass, your most elite navigational system. It’s your owl of Athena perched within, telling you precisely what supports you and what doesn’t. Your breath is the key to grounding, relaxation, and connection to your power. Tapped in, you may ask your inner being questions. Your answers will arrive as relaxation or inner contraction. The more expert you become at clearing your energy, the greater your self-trust develops.

These primary tools help you clear what is not yours to carry. Freeing yourself this way improves your ability to set energetic, physical, and emotional boundaries. Your inner guidance system lets you know which energies strengthen and weaken you, whether from situations, conversations, or even your inner narratives. I think it’s reasonable to emphasize taking steps to fortify this connection to hear what your inner being is telling you.

Let’s get started!

1. Spiritual Hygiene Tool: Water Rituals

I use this term to refer to any water-related activity that clears your energy and is cathartic, grounding, or healing. Water rituals are an essential tool for energetic health. They are my daily go-to for clearing and spiritual hygiene. Bathing, showering, and swimming do more than clean your body; they have the potential to remove vibrational energy accumulated throughout your day from people and places, thoughts, and emotions. Add bath salts for extra detoxing effects.

You can practice water rituals with your stated intentions to receive maximal benefit. When I bathe or shower, I intend to clear myself of anything that does not match my highest self. These practices level up your energy awareness, freeing you from the energetic impacts of outside influences.

Spiritual Hygiene Water Rituals

You needn’t get wet! Simply spend time near water, streams, and oceanside, or listen to rainfall. Intend for these moments to wash away anything that needs clearing. You’ll not want to skip a day once you practice clearing your energy this way!

2. Spiritual Hygiene Tool: Clear Your Spaces

Cleaning, purging items, and setting up your primary environments with love and attention sets the energetic stage for positive change! The physical environments we live and work in affect our overall well-being. Neglected and cluttered, non-intentional environments are burdensome, mentally and spiritually. Our inner world always affects the outer world and vice versa. In the earlier example, my car mirrored the hurriedness of carrying out the responsibilities of the past several months. The spring refresh reaffirms the value of personal maintenance. Adding a vanilla upgraded scent evokes comfort and calm instead of the lingering smell of work.

Last night, while writing this article, I got tea and discovered several jars of pickled peppers from last season in my fridge. Stopping to reflect on why I kept food that needed tossing, I realized my hesitation was because of the investment in making it. It’s not like pickled peppers are emergency food staples. We grew them organically. I canned them to share as special gifts, and they look pretty in the jars, although eating would be unwise. Our inner resistance to eliminating can gently reveal what we struggle to let go of beyond what’s in front of us. Completing the refrigerator purge reminds me of how I want to feel when I open it: abundant and nourished.

Clear Spaces, Declutter, Clean, Organize, Intend

Purging clears the way to enjoy what we love and value. Creating a space with intention aligns us energetically with the intentions we set. 3. Spiritual Hygiene Tool: Time in Nature

Spending time in nature is one of the best ways to reset your energy and remind yourself of your connection to the natural world. Artificial environments can pull you inside your head, leading some to lose sight of what it means to smell the roses. A pause in nature allows the rediscovery of forgotten truths. It promotes mental clarity and grounds you in the present moment.

If thoughts of what’s wrong have you jammed up or attempting to force outcomes, you’re not in alignment with receiving your highest desires. Energetic resistance in this form is vibrationally lowering self-pollution. Watering the seeds of undesirable thoughts bears poison fruit. Tending and caring for what is beautiful will never disappoint. Let nature humble you into seeing this truth.

3. Spiritual Hygiene Tool: Movement

Including movement as a daily spiritual hygiene tool promotes the natural flow of your energy, clearing what is stagnant, repressed, or heavy. Movement in combination with breathwork, such as practices in Qigong, Tai Chi, or Yoga, is effective. My adapted version of boxing is my preferred movement method for achieving this end.

If you love the focused workout you get at the gym, go there. But if you don’t, know that the more you mindfully do the stuff of living—raking the leaves, hauling laundry, moving furniture, or carrying the groceries—the more you’ll appreciate how well your body shows up for you. Moving your body to be more embodied will promote better body mechanics and help you release dense energies.

4. Spiritual Hygiene Tool: Hydrate and Detox

Proper hydration has many notable benefits. It aids digestion and flushes impurities from the system. Water is the best way to maintain adequate hydration. However, if you don’t enjoy drinking plain water, consider fruit-infused water and unsweetened teas. Certain teas are associated with many health benefits, and fruit-infused water can offer a daily dose of vitamins. Citrus-infused water is an excellent source of vitamin C, and fresh ginger tea is known for its anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties.

When I attended a meditation retreat, we drank ginger tea each day to flush our systems of substances: sugar, alcohol, and processed foods. Its effects were tangible. By the end of the retreat, our skin was shiny, minds sharp, and intuition heightened. My system never felt so clean! The overall diet was organic and pure, but the hydration alone contributed to digestive ease. I still drink teas for their clearing and elevating effects.

5. Spiritual Hygiene Tool: Boundaries

Dip in, dip out! I recently had an Akashic Records reading from a friend and received this guidance. I’d asked how to maintain a healthy balance of family, work, and self-care. Since that reading, those words come into my consciousness when my inner being detects energetic overload. As a caregiver, there’s much of the same that doesn’t give much back. I’ve found that I’m freer and happier as I honor my need to dip out. Even a short dip out helps me dip back in with an energy that uplifts because I have cared for myself and visited my garden.

Boundaries aren’t walls. They’re the gates and fences that allow you to enjoy the beauty of your own garden.

Lydia Hall

To set healthy boundaries, note where and with whom your energy is recharged or drained. With this knowledge, you’ll better understand when and where your boundaries need strengthening. Love yourself enough to set the physical and energetic boundaries necessary to maintain good health. With practice, healthy boundary setting comes easily and creates more authentic connections. Disconnect or at least dramatically limit time with those who are overly critical or consistently take energy without reciprocation. Stop accepting and excusing toxic behaviors, overcommitting your time, and arguing with people.

6. Spiritual Hygiene Tools: Sound Healing and Binaural Beats

Sound healing practices are rooted in many cultures. Instruments like Tibetan singing bowls and drums have been used for centuries to promote healing and well-being. I’ve felt the benefits of many of these sound healing tools, but binaural beats are the ones I use daily. Benefits are experienced both passively and with focused intentions.

Scientific evidence claims that binaural beats have only “… a modest, positive effect on memory, attention, pain perception, and relaxation.” I have benefited in all those areas and listen to them throughout the day. They are particularly helpful in improving focus, realigning towards positivity and calmness, and aiding restorative sleep. Binaural beats may be listened to on Pandora or Apple Music.

What you want is already here, in the unified field of pure potential. Everything you need to fulfill your greatest desire is already part of your being. But it can’t come out until you align with it, let go of the obstructions to it, and raise your vibration to the level at which it already exists.

7. Spiritual Hygiene Tools: Meditation and Prayer or Decree

Even short meditation sessions provide the benefits of greater relaxation, improved focus, and clarity. Longer, more intense transformative meditations may include body scanning and adherence to postural positioning. Any time spent in a quiet meditative space offers a cerebral break from processing thoughts and external stimuli. Decreeing is similar, but it also involves vocalizing higher vibrational intentions. These verbal expressions are similar to mantras, elevating one’s vibration like other forms of sound healing. They transmute energetic heaviness, clearing your connection to your source and higher mind.

Prayer of any kind is a powerful, intentional conversation that aligns us with higher realms. It affirms our existence is more than we see, bringing comfort and strength in the form of surrender to the loving source of all that is. It is a tender, supportive bath that shows you everything as precious in a divine scheme.

Keep Life Clean ~Keep Life Simple!

Solutions, peace, and relaxation appear when we’re not striving for them.

These seven tools for spiritual hygiene are among many practices that offer an energetic reset.

  • Discover your favorites, practice them faithfully, and keep it simple
  • Slow down to avoid complications stemming from overthinking and overdoing
  • Check inwardly often and detach from your thoughts
  • Breathe in good; breathe out heaviness
  • Clear the energetic debris that clouds your connection to your higher vibrational source energy

Remember, your state of being attracts or repels, elevates, or drags down. We bring into our experience a match to what we emanate. If you wear a fluorescent cloak of energetic fly tape, the flies will come and lay eggs. Your daily reset is a freeing, energy-cleansing cleanup that can transform your garments into regal violet robes of high-vibrational protective light.

  1. I love this, Estelle! So much of it is just the timely wisdom I needed to hear ( as usual with your posts!). I need to do some de-cluttering, which I’ve felt overwhelmed by, but now I feel inspired to make it an intentional healing ritual. Thanks for reminding me of this wisdom and my need to dust off the tools in my toolbox to make them more visible. 💜🙏💜
